Caring Beyond the Classroom Back To School Fair

This year, TANLA proudly hosted our 10th annual Caring Beyond the Classroom event on Saturday, August 10th at John Glenn High School. The celebration of this milestone anniversary was a resounding success, marked by the distribution of 1,300 actual backpacks filled with essential school supplies to students in our community.

As in previous years, the event was organized as a drive-thru, allowing families to conveniently collect their backpacks while maintaining a safe and efficient process. The event’s success was made possible through the collaborative efforts of countless volunteers, generous sponsors, and dedicated members, district and community partners. Together we ensured that each student started the school year with the supplies needed for success.

The joy and excitement on the faces of the students were undeniable, their bright smiles lighting up the day. Equally touching were the heartfelt expressions of gratitude from parents, who appreciated the support in preparing their children for the new school year. This year's event was not only a celebration of TANLA's 10 years of service but also a testament to the unwavering dedication and commitment of our members to the students and families we serve.

President’s Message TANLA President –Maureen Quiros Gray

Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of the Teachers Association of the Norwalk-La Mirada Area (TANLA), I would like to warmly welcome you to the 2024-2025 school year! I hope you had the opportunity to relax, recharge, and enjoy some well-deserved rest over the summer.

As we begin this new year, I’m honored to continue to be your TANLA President. Over the past few years, I have witnessed firsthand the incredible dedication and resilience of our educators, and I am excited to continue representing our members’ interests. My top priorities remain advocating for the best teaching and learning conditions, fostering transparent communication and collaboration, and providing steadfast support for all our members. Together, we will continue to address the challenges we face, and work toward ensuring that every teacher feels valued, heard, and supported in their role.

This year, we also remain focused on tackling broader issues affecting our schools, such as fair compensation, improved benefits, mental health resources, and safe working environments. I pledge to advocate for these critical issues and fight for the resources that will enable you to do your best work in and outside the classroom. It is essential that we ensure our voices are heard at every level—especially our school board—so that we can create the best possible learning environments for our students and secure the professional respect and working conditions that every educator deserves.

As we prepare to begin the new school year, I want to take a moment to recognize the incredible efforts of our TANLA members. You have consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to delivering high-quality education and meeting the diverse needs of our students, even in the face of challenges. I commend each of you for the outstanding job you’ve done in preparing for this year. Your dedication, creativity, and passion are what make our schools thrive, and your contributions to our students and communities are deeply appreciated.

I encourage you to stay engaged with the union, share your ideas, and participate in the ongoing work of improving our schools and profession. Together, we can create a school year filled with growth, achievement, and progress, not only for our students but for ourselves as educators.

Thank you again for all that you do. I wish you all the very best in the 2024-2025 school year, and I look forward to working alongside you to make this year our most successful yet!

In solidarity,

Maureen Quiros Gray
TANLA President
